SLS at Regional Conferences and Trainings

National Land Conservation Conference

Appraisers and foresters from Steigerwaldt Land Services, Inc. attended the National Land Conservation Conference hosted by the Land Trust Alliance on October 13-16 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Lee A. Steigerwaldt and Scott T. Zaremba participated as exhibitors at the conference and answered questions related to conservation easement appraisals, forest management, and real estate and mapping services. The conference featured keynote speakers Will Allen, founder and CEO of Growing Power, Inc.; Will Rogers, president and CEO of Trust for Public Land; and Rand Wentworth, president of the Land Trust Alliance.

The conference was well attended with approximately 1,400 representatives of conservation organizations and conservation leaders from across the United States, as well as other countries.

Attendees had the option of participating in seminars with multiple topics that included choosing the right appraiser, real estate and tax law for conservation professionals, conservation easement stewardship fundraising and membership outreach, and essential leadership practices. There were also several options for field trips from a glacial journey on the ice age trail to a Milwaukee river valley urban hike.

Next year the National Land Conservation Conference will be held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Forest Fest

The first annual Forest Fest, put on by Trees for Tomorrow and by Partners in Forestry, was held on August 6, 2011 at the Trees for Tomorrow Campus in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Staff foresters Lee A. Steigerwaldt and Haakon K. Hagemeister attended and exhibited at the event.

Forest Fest is a celebration of all the forest has to offer and where organizations with similar missions unite for a day to share their enthusiasm for the forest resource and the public. The first Forest Fest featured children’s activities, a live birds of prey program, forest management tour, FISTA Chainsaw safety and demo, and “Drawing Water” art exhibit.

Forest Fest featured a diverse group of exhibitors enthusiastic about the forest resource from professional associations, consultants, loggers, trucking companies, industry, groups with wildlife interests, and merchants. Some those to exhibit were the Ruffed Grouse Society, Society of American Foresters, UWSP Timbersports, Northwoods Mycological Club, Future Trappers of Wisconsin, Kretz Lumber, New Page, Ponsee, Packaging Corporation of America, the Forest History Association of Wisconsin, Northwoods Land Trust, and the Northwoods Wildlife Center.

Steigerwaldt Land Services, Inc. was pleased to be part of this inaugural event and looks forward to next year.

SLS Leads Arbor Day Celebration

Adam Debauch and Laura Heier, staff foresters with Steigerwaldt Land Services, recently led an Arbor Day celebration for the Tomahawk High School Environmental Club. Adam and Laura taught Environmental Club students about the holiday, forestry as an occupation, and focused on proper tree planting techniques. Planting began with a beautiful Sienna Maple, donated by Birchfield Nurseries, which was planted in front of the Tomahawk High School cafeteria. Next the students picked up their planting bars and did an excellent job planting 100 red pine seedlings, which were donated by Steigerwaldt Land Services.

Arbor Day was first celebrated in Nebraska in 1854 and is now a nationally recognized environmental celebration in which every state joins in the festivities. Taking place on the last Friday of April, Arbor Day is dedicated to the planting of trees. Benefiting us in many ways, trees purify our air and water, act as wind breaks for our homes and agricultural fields, beautify our landscape, provide food and habitat for wildlife, are a renewable resource, provide a number of different wood products, and employ a vast number of our population with employment in the wood products and landscaping industries. Next year on Arbor Day, join in the celebration and plant a tree in your community.

A special thanks to: Todd Frederickson, the Environmental Club advisor, for helping to organizing this event, Steigerwaldt Land Services for teaching the students and for donating trees, Birchfield Nurseries for donating the Sienna Maple and especially to the students involved in planting: Beth Nettesheim, Boon Singthong, Hannah Schmit, Alex Graeber, Ely Graeber, Austin Kammer, Jenna Otterholt, Joe Nettesheim, Cassie Silvernale, Sarah Brown, Kelsey Weiler, Trina Source, and Saydee Juedes. This was a fun and successful Arbor Day celebration.

SLS at Trade Shows around Wisconsin

Appraisers, foresters, arborists, and real estate representatives from Steigerwaldt Land Services attended sports shows around Wisconsin this spring to talk with attendees about their land management needs and the services SLS provides.

Foresters Kyle Cummings, Josh Burling, and Adam DeBauch participated as exhibitors at the Northern Wisconsin Deer Classic and Winter Sports Show in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on January 28 through 30, 2011. The show attracted approximately 3,200 people and 70 exhibitors. Foresters were able to answer questions related to the Managed Forest Law (MFL) program and make contacts with private landowners interested in managing their woodlands.

The Central Wisconsin Sports Show was held February 18 through 20 in Wausau, Wisconsin. Appraiser/arborist Lee Steigerwaldt, forester Adam DeBauch, and real estate representative Jon Long answered questions from participants about forestry, land use, and real estate issues.

Even during a busy start to the year, SLS enjoys participating in these trade shows in order to increase the awareness of land management consulting services available throughout Wisconsin, northern Michigan, and northeastern Minnesota. These are great opportunities for the company’s professionals to talk with people about what it has to offer in forestland management services, appraisal services, forested and recreational property listed for sale, and mapping services provided by Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Look for SLS at future trade shows throughout Wisconsin.
