SLS at Trade Shows around Wisconsin

Appraisers, foresters, arborists, and real estate representatives from Steigerwaldt Land Services attended sports shows around Wisconsin this spring to talk with attendees about their land management needs and the services SLS provides.

Foresters Kyle Cummings, Josh Burling, and Adam DeBauch participated as exhibitors at the Northern Wisconsin Deer Classic and Winter Sports Show in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on January 28 through 30, 2011. The show attracted approximately 3,200 people and 70 exhibitors. Foresters were able to answer questions related to the Managed Forest Law (MFL) program and make contacts with private landowners interested in managing their woodlands.

The Central Wisconsin Sports Show was held February 18 through 20 in Wausau, Wisconsin. Appraiser/arborist Lee Steigerwaldt, forester Adam DeBauch, and real estate representative Jon Long answered questions from participants about forestry, land use, and real estate issues.

Even during a busy start to the year, SLS enjoys participating in these trade shows in order to increase the awareness of land management consulting services available throughout Wisconsin, northern Michigan, and northeastern Minnesota. These are great opportunities for the company’s professionals to talk with people about what it has to offer in forestland management services, appraisal services, forested and recreational property listed for sale, and mapping services provided by Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Foresters Discuss Management Activities on Property Tour

Foresters Tom Hittle and Forrest Gibeault participated in a field tour of the Drager-Monahan Forest Trust property in Vilas County, Wisconsin, on Saturday, August 28. Steigerwaldt Land Services developed an extensive forest management plan for this unique property and is providing ongoing forest management consulting services. The field day was sponsored by the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association and Partners in Forestry Landowner Cooperative. The field tour includes several stops where Forrest and Tom spoke about harvest and site preparation activities that maintained the property's unique aesthetic and recreational value while encouraging natural conifer regeneration.

Ed Drager explains the property's history, dating back to the early Wisconsin logging era in the late 1800s and early 1900s and his family's ownership beginning in the early 1930s. The family has actively managed the property with timber sales and other forest management activities since the mid 1940s.

The group listens to Forrest explain the silvicultural prescription behind a completed pine shelterwood harvest and how natural pine regeneration is becoming established to meet the landowner's goal of perpetuating a vigorous future forest cover.

New MFL Deadlines

Recent legislation has changed some of the workings of the Managed Forest Law (MFL) program to make it easier to explain, enter, and enforce. For all new MFL entries, beginning 2012, the application (previously called the MFL Petition) deadline has been changed.

The deadline for all entries will be June 1 (beginning June 1, 2011 for the 2012 MFL entry year). The new deadline date will be for the entire packet (completed application, required documents, and a completed plan).

Sold: 2,571 Acres of High-Quality Timberland

Steigerwaldt Land Services, in conjunction with LandVest, recently sold 2,571 acres of high-quality northern hardwood timberland in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. Ranging in size from 37 to 680 acres, the nine individual tracts offer huge investment potential to the buyer.

“This is a great time to buy forestland,” said Ed Steigerwaldt, president of Steigerwaldt Land Services. “The key to making money with a forestland investment is picking the right land to start with. We help people buy good land to start with and then manage it aggressively.”

Conference Round Up

We have had a busy spring attending conferences and shows around Wisconsin. Edward F. Steigerwaldt, president of Steigerwaldt Land Services, gave a talk entitled "Advantages of Owning and Managing Your Own Forestland" at the Great Northwoods Sports Show in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, on March 27. Steigerwaldt Land Services foresters, real estate brokers, and land sales specialists were at the convention to offer information about recreational and forestland sales, entering property into the Managed Forest Law (MFL) tax program, and additional services.

The Michigan and Wisconsin Society of American Foresters Joint Meeting was held in Marinette, Wisconsin, on March 10 and 11. Thomas J. Hittle, Forestry and GIS Operations Manager, was part of a panel discussion entitled "Recreational Considerations for Forest Management." Additional foresters from Steigerwaldt Land Services participated in the two-day meeting.

The Wisconsin Woodland Owners convention was held in Wausau, Wisconsin, on February 18. Foresters Haakon Hagemeister and Scott Zaremba and Real Estate Agent Jonathan Long talked to landowners about managing forestland, entering property in the MFL program, and appraisal and brokerage services offered by Steigerwaldt Land Services.

Jody Isaacson from our Right-of-Way department participated in the Wisconsin County Highway Association meeting in Wisconsin Dells in January. The conference attracted 514 attendees, including state, county, and corporate participants.
