Geographic Information Systems

GIS mapping tools provide land managers with highly detailed information about their property and the ability to wisely plan for the future. Steigerwaldt Land Services was the first forestry consulting firm in the Lake States to use GIS applications in the natural resource field. Since that time, we have mapped and developed applications on over 1 million acres for our large and varied client base, giving us extensive experience in a broad range of GIS applications.

We take pride in building management system tools that foresters, land managers, and other professionals can use on a routine basis to enhance their capabilities and more efficiently and effectively perform their duties. See what we can do for you:

Needs assessment

Working closely with clients, with expertise enhanced by our own use of GIS tools in everyday forest and land management activities, we give an honest assessment of each project’s needs and the best route to most efficiently solve them. As professional foresters, we fully understand the needed utility and how to effectively build that utility into a client’s GIS application.

Application development

The ability to link tabular information from a database or spreadsheet format to a geographically defined area is invaluable in allowing users unlimited options to analyze data. Our GIS applications and maps are used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Detailed forest inventory and mapping projects
  • Large-scale maps and displays to facilitate project discussions
  • Smaller exhibits and maps to provide geographic background in reports
  • Emergency management mapbooks for personnel responding to forest fires or dam failures, and for evaluating forest fire effects
  • Regional resource studies and industry applications

We also offer Microsoft Access programming solutions to combine this software’s data management strengths with geospatial GIS applications.

Trainings

To help our clients to be able to effectively use the data we provide, we offer GIS training customized to the client’s needs and applications, in office or at the client’s site.

GIS-enhanced services

Our staff of foresters, real estate appraisers, and right-of-way specialists use GIS applications and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) for a variety of daily professional tasks, such as identifying features that impact forest management decisions, navigating for timber inventory work and property inspections, and project tracking and management purposes. Using state-of-the-art equipment and technology ensures precise products for our clients.

Ongoing professional development

With roots in the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) software since its early status as an acknowledged worldwide leader in GIS applications, we employ the most advanced GIS software available. Our experts regularly attend ESRI national and local meetings to stay abreast of changes in the rapidly growing industry.
