Geographic Information Systems

Since 1991, SLS has digitally converted more than 500,000 acres of land for client use within their own computer systems. GIS links tabular information from a database or spreadsheet to a geographically defined area, line or point allowing the client to analyze and query the data.

Since 1991, Steigerwaldt Land Services (SLS) has digitally converted more than 500,000 acres of land for our clients using our Geographic Information System (GIS) software. As professional foresters, SLS understands what foresters and natural resource managers need to know. We can customize the GIS project to fit the client's needs including budget, time restrictions, and end product uses.

GIS Features

The strength of GIS lies in its ability to link tabular information from a database or spread sheet format to a geographically defined area, line or point. Once this link is established, data can be queried or analyzed in unlimited ways.

Using Arc/Info software (ESRI ™), existing maps are translated into layers of digital information. Road networks, water features, section lines and forest stands are examples of GIS layers. Any combination of layers can be displayed on hard copy output or in a related software program called ArcView ™, a relatively easy-to-use data viewer program that runs in the Windows environment.

GIS Training

We want our clients to be able to effectively use the data we provide them. We offer GIS training customized to our clients’ needs and applications in ArcView 3.x and 9.x environments. Contact Gary at ext. 325 for more information.
